Who, doesn’t want and long for no pun intended, beautiful, strong, healthy, shiny long or short hair, depending on your preference but still maintaining such a depth of health and strength. We not only want that for our hair but for ourselves in general. But, for this 7 Days of Principle, we are discussing hair. Well, this is for someone (you know who you are ) she has been asking me for a while now to reveal my hair story and how I got my hair to where it is today, and trust me it has been a story of patience and perseverance, as I find with most things in life.
From The Inside Out
It all starts from the inside out. Following a super healthy lifestyle is something I have been doing for years, so what I was eating was already a rock-solid foundation. I always remember when we first came to this country from Ukraine where I was born and my mother is from, my father is Ghanaian, back in the ’70s, there was nothing absolutely nothing for my kind of hair. I remember pre-teens my mum and I going to hairdressers and actively seeking something for my type of hair. There was nothing wrong with my hair, just the odd frizz days nothing major, everyone has bad hair days. It was more a search for conditioning shampoos and conditioners for dryer hair.
When we came across Kerastase that was major. But, now WOW, it seems that all ethnicities are suddenly being noticed. Don’t even get me started on that here. So moving on, around 28 years ago, a certain someone, decided to go to Hairdressing College and my hair was the experiment of a trim. Which turned into He Cut My Hair Off, and thus led to such a distressing time for me, I was devastated. How could someone be so cruel? The problem was, that it took years to rectify and that is why I am so pleased and grateful for my hair now as it has been a long road.
After the stressful situation, I self-inflicted the next stage of my hair journey which was to straighten it. My my, what a palaver. A drawn-out process back then, and always looking for the perfect hair. I mean, always being conscious of the rain and just far too much fussing around is no way to live. It is all part of the journey and experience though.
Until one day I decided I had had enough. Maturity and sense set in my head and I decided enough was enough and I had it cut. It took a visit to 3 hairdressers in Sydney where I was living at the time to agree to cut it short enough, it was at my shoulders then, so not too long, but would have to be cut so short in order for it to grow back its natural curls.
Thus the process begins. Annoying, self -conscious, tedious experimental, are just some of the words I can describe for this long drawn out process.
In, the in-between stage thank goodness for the amazing Kim Kimble In Los Angeles, @kimkimblehair. I got into wigs and felt a sense of freedom and fun from the wigs I had specifically made for me there. Anyone going through the in-between stages of hair growth I cannot recommend her highly enough for a personalised made to measure wig. I do not wear them now but they are always there if I want to change up my style.
Now, I can attest that the market right now, is fantastic for such a diverse range of products for the hair. As you can see from the photo this is what I have been using for several years now and I am happy to say it has all worked. I rotate all my products but this is what has done the job for me.
I will briefly describe each product here and at the end, it is up to you what you want to try. Nothing works without trying it first though and, as I have found everything takes time.
Phylia De M
Sadly, this product is no longer available but has been instrumental in the growth of my hair. So sad to see this go, Kazu I hope you are doing well and thank you so much for bringing this product to the market. I am so grateful I got to meet you all those years ago in Los Angeles.
Luckily, the clever Shabir from victoria health has created Fulvic Health. I have just started using the mist which contains the Fulvic Acid ingredient that was in the Phylia products. The reason I have photographed and mentioned Phylia is that it has been part of my journey and is worth the feature. We must always remind ourselves of where we started in every journey in life and give gratitude for where we are now, however small and insignificant you may think something is. Nothing, of course, is ever insignificant and everything is part of the bigger puzzle of the journey we are all on.
Homemade Rosemary Oil.
As much as I can, I have always made everything I possibly can from scratch. Natural is always best where ever possible in some cases. This is so super easy. Please let me know if you would like me to do a YOUTUBE video on this.
Fresh Rosemary sprigs I dry them in my dehydrator
Extra Virgin Olive oil
Place the Rosemary sprigs in a clean glass jar and cover with the oil.
Pour over the oil, close the lid and leave to sit on the windowsill so the sunlight can penetrate.
Leave for 1 month
Strain, dispose of the leaves and if you like to add an essential oil like Bergamot My all-time favourite smell well one of them, I would add it to anything if I could or Eucalyptus.
Decant into appropriate glass container.
This is such a fantastic oil for the scalp to promote hair growth.
Simply apply to the scalp just a few drops, massage
The rosemary oil can also be used as a body oil and effectively rubbed on the belly to aid digestion.
Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches
I, first got introduced to these products at one of my favourite stores ever, MECCA in Melbourne. Seriously I could spend all day in there. The name says it all its a Mecca of such amazing products. It says what it does on the bottle and more. I wash my hair just once to twice a week and would not be without these products. Amazing. @michaelvanclarke. I purchase mine from either @feelunique or
@lookfantastic two really great online retailers with a vast range of products.
Philip Kingsley PK4
Phenomenal, I definitely saw significant results in my hair after discovering these wonder tablets some time ago. Honestly, get the 3 months initially and I advise doing before and after shots of your hair and measuring its growth. I am currently having a break from these as I am in month one of the LYMA product. But for anyone who has not tried PK4 and currently does not have the budget for LYMA, this is a great start. I would also love to have you share your feedback with me on any of the suggestions I have made here, it would be greatly appreciated. These can also be purchased at Cult Beauty.
Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrosolate
Not only is this product fantastic for joint care it has also been a significant aid to the growth of my hair. It is a bioactive product and contains over 90% protein which is assimilated by the body.
I took this product for around 4 months in isolation to try, it but to be honest I personally would not buy it again. This is the great thing with being open to trying new things, you get to know what actually works for you and by trying something new and knowing its not for you, I never have to buy it again. Its the only way of knowing.
He Shou Wu
Another product I have had by my side for years. I cherish this super powerful Adaptogen. Along with all the others, but this is a centuries known powerhouse Chinese Herb that not only nourishes your hair but has long been revered for its benefits and effects on our skin, health and spiritual awareness. It was discovered in 812 AD.
An incredible tonic for Kidney Jing, stimulating and harmonising our adrenals. It calms the nervous system and used along with my daily yoga practice I know that all these spiritual practices I have done for years have led me to where I am today and all have a cumulative effect on my life. Because of the many benefits, I will actually do a post worthy of everything that should be mentioned for this amazing tonic separately in the future but for now, back to hair. It actually translated to MR HE’S BLACK HAIR, as it is known to restore your hair colour. I have mine every morning in an organic V60 made black organic coffee. But once you get into it there are of course many individual ways of taking this. I for one have never been put off the taste of anything, as to me it is the question of
How Is This Benefiting Me? Why be put off by the taste of something that is so good for you. Think about that for a minute.
Happy hair goals boys and girls. This is not just for women it benefits all of us.
