Eat Your Veg at Hilltown Organics

I feel incredibly blessed to be on the path I am on and have such a keen understanding and knowledge about where all my food comes from.

After living this way for many years I have been fortunate to live in a few amazing countries so far, and experience different cuisines and produce.

New Zealand, Australia, England and I was born in Ukraine. To me no matter where I am in the world on my travels or living. I seem to have an internal magnet that always leads me to the right source, of what I am seeking. We all do as long as we stay in alignment and tap into it.

So, after living in Australia on and off for many years. I found myself back in the UK after my father passed away about 2 years ago.

Hilltown Organics

Currently I am living in the heart of the beautiful Devon Countryside. So was very excited to be able to source Martin and Sara from Hilltown Organics.

All my vegetable come from them. I only eat lovingly tended to food without harmful pesticides. When you live this way for as long as I have, you really know what good food tastes like. After all eating well is one of the highest forms of self-respect. So pay your farmer and not your pharmacist.

Of course, it is not just the taste but the amazing buzzing health benefits it gives you. Why compromise and live any other way when you know how good you get to feel every single day because of the conscious choices you decide to live by.

So this week lets adopt our 7 Days of Policy and perhaps make just one small change.

7 Days of Meat-Free Meals

Just try it and see how you feel.

Visiting The Land

After visiting their land, Martin was kind enough to grant me an interview. He brought me a bag of his salad. This salad alone has over 40 different leaves and herbs in it. Delicious.

What, Martin does is a Polycultural growing system, with wild edible plants on his beautiful farm. They really have a wonderful array of vegetable, Red Russian Kale, broad beans, mint, dill, lettuces and a multitude and array of other delicious vegetables.

Plantain, sorrel, nettles, angelica and dandelion. What I love about their philosophy is that most people see some of these as weeds but they are in fact a powerhouse of nutrients. Martin and Sara tend to the land themselves and adopt a no dig policy. This is very time consuming but the way land should be tended for the preservation of the nutrients.

Their shop which they run alongside the other cooperative members is based in Okehampton in Devon and what running a shop as this does is keep the local economy working and growing.

They area also at the local farmers market in Exeter, Devon on Thursdays.

In fact over 50% of the turnover of independent retailers goes back into the local community, compared to just 5% from supermarkets.

Martin grew up on a dairy farm and once his parents sold that he started with a vegetable stall because of his passion for Horticulture and wildlife. He is a member of the Garden Clubs and became very interested in Organic Vegetable growing. Working at Shillingford Organics he learnt how important wildlife is to organic farming as well as how fertilisers and chemicals are impacting on the earth and soil life.

Chemicals are damaging to the beneficial microbes in the soil. He has such an extensive amount of knowledge about the importance of this way of farming.

There is so much amazing information I really would not be able to do it as much justice writing about it so you can actually listen to him yourself.

Eat Weeds The Podcast with Robin Harford

Here is Martin’s podcast. He called it ‘The Future of Farming is Foraging’. It originally aired on the 5th of October 2018.

I really recommend you to listen to it. You will get a full depth of understanding from the interview yourselves.

Let me know what you think?

And of course, if any of you are local I cannot urge you enough to go and visit. I go every Tuesday and Martin always lets me know what is currently available and in season.
